Slovenia
After Vienna, Budapest and Slovakia my next main stop was Italy. On my way to Italy I figured I’d stop in Slovenia for a few days and check out the mountains there. In Slovenia I spent one night in the capital city of Ljubljana and three nights in the mountains, two of which were at a small little mountain hut. The mountains in Slovenia were amazing. My pictures definitely don’t do them any justice. I had a hard time getting myself to the right places at the right times for epic golden hour landscape shots, but I think I was able to pull together a collection of shots that together can show the true beauty of the Slovenian alps.
The hiking here was amazing. The shot below was one of the peaks that I was able to climb.
The image below is where I stayed for two nights. The hut to the right is the main house where my host stayed and where the kitchen is. I don’t think I actually took a photo of the hut I stayed in… The hut to the left was also available to rent. Other than the host, and her adorable guard dog, I was the only one there for two nights. With soup and past for dinner, and crepes for breakfast, I was well nourished for a couple days of hiking up mountains.
Ljubljana is a beautiful city with a nice old town center that was nice to wander for an evening. There were many places to eat, and I settled on Mexican food. I just had to try some Slovenian Mexican food. And I definitely got some of the best veggie fajitas I’ve ever had. And followed it up with a traditional Slovenian dessert that was layers of apple, poopy seeds, cheese, nuts and some other things. Weird at first, but very delicious. One reoccurring theme in Slovenia was the food portion sizes. Both in the city and the mountains the portions were huge. As someone who is often concerned about portions be big enough for my appetite when I eat out, I found myself having trouble finishing my meals.
And of course there was a castle!
I hope to find myself back in Slovenia some day. There are plenty more mountains to be climbed!
